Ottawa-based antenna manufacturer C-COM Satellite Systems announced on October 14 that it has developed a vehicle-mounted Q-band antenna, according to SpaceQ Canada. The system tracks communications platforms operating about 20 kilometres above Earth in the stratosphere, turning a vehicle into a mobile ground gateway. [1][2]

SpaceQ Canada reported that the new antenna extends C-COM's driveaway product line into the emerging market for stratospheric cellular networks. High-altitude platform stations, known as HAPS, consist of uncrewed aircraft and airships designed to serve as airborne cell sites. [1]

Telecommunications operators are actively developing these high-altitude airborne systems to deliver coverage from above. SoftBank is among the operators preparing HAPS services, aiming for a rollout in Japan in 2027, according to SpaceQ Canada. [1]
