A team of students and researchers at the University of Alabama in Huntsville conducted three rocket-motor firing tests on a prototype lunar landing pad during the summer of 2026, Universe Today reported. The trials demonstrated that the prototype could capture and redirect rocket exhaust using an integrated vent system. [1]

Universe Today reported that the project aims to develop landing infrastructure for future operations on the Moon. Spacecraft performing vertical landing and takeoff maneuvers on the lunar surface generate intense heat and strong forces that disrupt surrounding surface material. [1]

Developing safe landing systems remains a major focus for lunar exploration, as FTMQ Space reported earlier. European Space Agency researchers recently mapped thousands of small craters to assist safe crewed and uncrewed landings, using artificial intelligence to process high-resolution surface imagery.
