European team tests ExoMars rover prototype during desert field trials
European engineers and scientists conducted an eight-day field test with a prototype Mars rover to prepare for the uncrewed Rosalind Franklin mission in 2030.

ESA Exploration and the European Space Agency reported that a team of around 100 scientists and engineers conducted desert testing with a Mars rover prototype named Charlie in September. The remote science team operated the vehicle from approximately 1,200 kilometres away during the eight-day exercise. [1][2]
According to ESA Exploration, the prototype vehicle travelled 220 metres across rugged, barren terrain. The exercise allowed operators to rehearse safe movement, evaluate exploration strategies, and practise maximising scientific data collection in preparation for actual surface operations. [1]
The field trial served as an operational rehearsal for the uncrewed ExoMars Rosalind Franklin rover, which is scheduled to land on Mars in 2030. Mars has a rotational period of 24.6 hours and an orbital period lasting 687 Earth days. [1][5]
ESA Exploration noted that the joint rehearsal brought together European specialists to refine remote procedures ahead of the surface mission on the Red Planet. [1]
