The Vera Rubin Observatory has released an image of the Seagull nebula captured by its Commissioning Camera, Universe Today reported. The engineering camera operated for roughly seven weeks in 2024 to test equipment and procedures ahead of full observatory operations. [1]

According to Universe Today, the observatory held its First Look Event in July 2025, revealing its initial views of the cosmos. That release included an image known as the Cosmic Treasure Chest. The newly released Seagull nebula picture demonstrates the capabilities of the testing hardware prior to those initial public images. [1]

The Vera Rubin Observatory is located on the El Peñon peak of Cerro Pachon in northern Chile at an altitude of 2,682 meters. The facility sits alongside the Gemini South and Southern Astrophysical Research Telescopes, while its base facility is situated about 100 kilometers away in La Serena. [2]

The main task of the Chilean observatory is to perform an astronomical survey of the southern sky every few nights. This work will construct a ten-year time-lapse record named the Legacy Survey of Space and Time. [2]
