Researchers find new method to study solar flare behavior using ribbons
Scientists have developed a new technique to observe complex solar flaring by tracking flare ribbons formed during magnetic reconnection events.

Researchers have discovered a new way to study solar flaring behavior on the surface of the Sun, Universe Today reported. Solar flaring is complex behavior triggered by magnetic reconnection, which occurs when magnetic field lines break and snap back to the solar surface. Universe Today noted that while the details of flaring are traditionally difficult to observe, this new method helps reveal these hidden solar explosions. [1]
The Sun directly affects daily life on Earth because its flaring activity impacts the planet, according to Universe Today. This contrasts with more distant astrophysical phenomena like supermassive black holes, which do not directly touch daily human activities. [1]
As FTMQ Space reported earlier, solar activity often manifests in major flaring events from active sunspot regions. On October 9, active region AR4547 produced an M1.3 flare behind the solar limb at 14:09 UTC, though the resulting coronal mass ejection missed Earth. [4]
Extreme solar activity can severely disrupt technological infrastructure on Earth. The most intense geomagnetic storm in recorded history, known as the Carrington Event, peaked on September 1 and September 2 in 1859 during solar cycle 10. That event generated global auroras and caused telegraph stations to spark and catch fire after a coronal mass ejection collided with the magnetosphere of Earth. [3]
In short
- Researchers developed a new method to study solar flares by observing magnetic reconnection.
- Magnetic reconnection occurs when solar magnetic field lines break and snap back to the surface.
- The Carrington Event of September 1859 was the most intense geomagnetic storm in recorded history.
