The James Webb Space Telescope captured an image of the galaxy cluster MACS J0454.1-0300, Universe Today reported. Universe Today also refers to the target as MACS J0454.1-030. The uncrewed observatory recorded the brilliant golden galaxies as part of its Picture of the Month release. [1]
Light from the galaxies in the cluster traveled approximately 6 billion light-years to reach the telescope sensors, Universe Today reported. The immense mass of the galaxy cluster creates a gravitational lens by warping the surrounding spacetime. This effect bends and magnifies the light coming from more distant objects located behind the cluster. [1]
Astronomers routinely use gravitational lensing to observe distant celestial bodies that would otherwise be too faint to see. The James Webb Space Telescope is an international collaboration operated by NASA, the European Space Agency, and the Canadian Space Agency, according to Universe Today. [1]
The observatory is the largest telescope in space and is designed to conduct infrared astronomy. Its high-resolution instruments allow it to observe objects that are too old, distant, or faint for the Hubble Space Telescope. [2]
In short
- Light from the galaxies in MACS J0454.1-0300 traveled about 6 billion light-years to reach Earth.
- The mass of the galaxy cluster creates a gravitational lens that bends and magnifies light from background objects.
- The James Webb Space Telescope is operated jointly by NASA, the European Space Agency, and the Canadian Space Agency.
