SpaceX identifies unshared satellite data as top low Earth orbit hazard
SpaceX warned regulators that satellite operators who withhold high precision tracking data create severe collision hazards for low Earth orbit constellations.

SpaceX told regulatory and operational stakeholders on October 6, 2026, that satellite operators refusing to share ephemeris data present the primary collision hazard in low Earth orbit. SatNews reported that the operator behind the Starlink constellation identified withheld location data as a critical operational concern for automated collision avoidance. [1][6]
The missing telemetry includes high precision orbital position data and planned maneuver schedules, SatNews said. SpaceX warned that uncoordinated maneuvers by third-party satellite owners impair automated flight systems and raise the threat of generating catastrophic orbital debris. [1][6]
Low Earth orbit contains artificial objects operating at periods of 128 minutes or less and altitudes up to 2,000 kilometers. Cascading collisions in this congested zone could dramatically increase space debris, potentially rendering specific orbital regions unsafe for long term space activities. [7][8]
As FTMQ Space reported earlier, SpaceX regularly operates in low Earth orbit, including planned deployments for third parties such as the United States Space Force. [9]
In short
- SpaceX identified unshared ephemeris data as the primary collision hazard in low Earth orbit on October 6, 2026.
- Withheld telemetry and uncoordinated orbital maneuvers impair automated collision avoidance systems.
- Low Earth orbit encompasses orbital periods of 128 minutes or less up to altitudes of 2,000 kilometers.
