Perseverance surpasses Opportunity to claim Martian distance record

NASA's uncrewed Perseverance Mars rover surpassed the off-world driving distance record on October 11, 2026. NASA Earth Observatory and SatNews both reported that the rover completed a 299.6-foot drive, which equals 91.31 meters, on its 2,006th Martian day of operations. [1][2]

The drive pushed the cumulative distance of Perseverance to 28.10 miles, or 45.22 kilometers, according to SatNews. This total eclipses the previous mark of 28.06 miles, or 45.16 kilometers, established by NASA's Opportunity rover during its mission between 2004 and 2018. [1][2]

Navigation cameras aboard Perseverance captured images of its tracks across the rocky Martian landscape during the milestone drive, NASA Earth Observatory reported. SatNews noted that the six-wheeled rover relies on an onboard AutoNav autonomous navigation system to calculate driving paths in real time while traversing the terrain. [1][2]

NASA has operated several rovers on the surface of Mars over past decades. Curiosity is another car-sized NASA rover that launched in 2011 and landed in 2012 to explore Gale crater and Mount Sharp, where it continues to operate long past its planned two-year mission. [4]
