Perseverance rover sets record for off world driving distance on Mars
NASA's Perseverance Mars rover has set a new record for the furthest distance driven on another world, surpassing the previous mark set by the Opportunity rover.

The uncrewed NASA Perseverance Mars rover set a new record for the longest distance driven on the surface of another celestial body on October 11, 2026. NASA News and SatNews both reported that the vehicle surpassed the previous off-world driving record on that date. [1][2]
According to SatNews, a drive of 299.6 feet, or 91.31 meters, took place during the mission's 2,006th Martian day. That drive brought the cumulative total distance driven by the six-wheeled rover to 28.10 miles, or 45.22 kilometers. This surpassed the previous mark of 28.06 miles, or 45.16 kilometers, established by the Opportunity rover between 2004 and 2018. [2]
The traverse capabilities of the vehicle rely on an onboard autonomous navigation system named AutoNav. SatNews reported that the AutoNav system calculates drive paths in real time while the rover is rolling across the Martian surface. [2]
NASA News reported that both the Perseverance rover and the Curiosity rover remain operational on the surface of Mars. The new distance totals reflect data recorded as of October 11, 2026. [1]
