NASA's Curiosity rover has captured a detailed panorama of distant, wind-carved Martian cliffs during a morning scene on the red planet. Phys.org Space and NASA News both reported that the image was snapped at 8:30 a.m. local Mars time. The morning light illuminated rock formations known as yardangs on the horizon while showing blue hues in the foreground. [1][2]
The uncrewed car-sized rover continues to examine the surface of Mars long past its initial design timeline. Curiosity originally landed inside Gale crater in 2012 following its launch in 2011 as part of NASA's Mars Science Laboratory mission. It continues to operate and explore Mount Sharp more than a decade after its original two-year mission ended. [7]
Phys.org Space and NASA News both reported that mission scientists have long waited to examine the wind-carved cliff features up close. The newly released imagery provides the most detailed view of these specific geological formations captured by the rover to date. [1][2]
