NASA's uncrewed Curiosity rover achieved an elevation milestone on Mars by reaching one kilometer above the floor of Gale Crater on 26 August 2026, which marked its 4,996th Martian day of operation. NASA Earth Observatory reported the achievement, noting that the rover subsequently captured a view looking back at the crater floor on 5 September 2026, during its 5,006th sol. [1]

In additional image coverage, Phys.org Space reported that Curiosity captured a newly released morning panorama showing blue hues in the foreground and light illuminating distant wind-carved cliffs known as yardangs on the horizon. Phys.org Space noted that the image was snapped at 8:30 a.m. local Mars time. [2]

Curiosity has been climbing the lower foothills of Mount Sharp since 2014, according to NASA Earth Observatory. Mount Sharp is a five-kilometer-tall mountain situated inside the surrounding Gale Crater. [1]

The car-sized rover was originally launched in 2011 as part of NASA's Mars Science Laboratory mission and landed on Mars the following year. It continues to operate over a decade after completing its initial two-year mission assignment. [5]
