NASA has committed to launching an uncrewed ultraviolet space telescope named the UltraViolet EXplorer in 2031, Universe Today and Starlust.org reported. Starlust.org specified that the launch of the mission, known as UVEX, is targeted for January 2031. [1][5]
The new space telescope is designed to perform a wide ultraviolet sky survey. According to Universe Today, this survey will complement infrared observations conducted by other space telescopes. [1]
Universe Today reported that UVEX is roughly 100 times more powerful than its predecessor observatory, GALEX, which concluded its operational mission in 2013. [1]
NASA Science and The Daily Galaxy both reported that the space telescope mission has recently cleared a major milestone in its development path. [3][4]
In short
- NASA has scheduled the UVEX space telescope for launch in 2031.
- UVEX is an uncrewed observatory designed to perform an ultraviolet sky survey.
- The new telescope is roughly 100 times more powerful than the former GALEX mission.
