Four volunteers will exit a simulated Mars habitat on Saturday, October 31, after spending 378 days in isolation. NASA News reported that the habitat is located inside a facility at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Live coverage of the departure from the habitat will begin at 3 p.m. EDT. [1]

The uncrewed simulation collected health and performance data throughout the yearlong duration. NASA News reported that researchers will use this data to develop methods to counter human spaceflight risks during future Artemis and Moon Base missions. [1]

The simulation is part of the Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog, known as CHAPEA. CHAPEA consists of three total missions, with the first mission beginning on June 25, 2023. The habitat is contained inside a hangar at the Johnson Space Center. To mimic a real mission to Mars, researchers included a 22-minute communication delay, resource limitations, simulated equipment failures, and simulated spacewalks. [4]
