Lazuli Space Telescope selects 27 exoplanet targets for planned 2029 launch
Researchers have selected 27 exoplanet targets for the Lazuli Space Telescope, which is set to become the first privately funded space telescope when it launches by 2029.

Phys.org reported that researchers have selected 27 exoplanet targets for the Lazuli Space Telescope. As FTMQ Space reported earlier, the uncrewed observatory is scheduled to launch by 2029 and will be the first private space telescope. [1][2]
The Lazuli Space Telescope is funded by former Google chief executive officer Eric Schmidt, according to Phys.org and earlier reporting by FTMQ Space. The observatory will feature a 3-meter mirror, which is larger than the 2.4-meter mirror on the Hubble Space Telescope. [1][2]
Phys.org reported that the spacecraft will carry three instruments to conduct its observations. These include a wide-field optical imager, an integral field spectrograph, and the ExtraSolar Coronagraph. [1][2]
In separate deep space research, FTMQ Space reported earlier that astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope detected a lopsided atmosphere on exoplanet WASP-17b. Powerful atmospheric winds cause one side of the hot gas giant, located 1,300 light-years from Earth, to bulge outward. [3]
In short
- The Lazuli Space Telescope is planned to launch by 2029 as the first private space telescope.
- The observatory is funded by former Google CEO Eric Schmidt and features a 3-meter primary mirror.
- Lazuli will carry a wide-field optical imager, an integral field spectrograph, and the ExtraSolar Coronagraph.
- Researchers have identified 27 exoplanet targets for the Lazuli mission.
