Researchers at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory are using three dimensional simulations to analyze how nuclear devices could deflect or disrupt hazardous asteroids, Phys.org Space reported. The uncrewed planetary defense strategy models the deployment of a nuclear explosive near an asteroid to prevent potential impacts on Earth. [1]

The research team published their findings in The Planetary Science Journal, according to Phys.org Space. The study utilizes the laboratory Spheral simulation code to model how X-rays generated by a near-surface nuclear explosion would heat and vaporize an asteroid surface material. [1]

Asteroid impact avoidance methods aim to alter the trajectory of near-Earth objects to prevent destructive environmental disasters. Severe impacts can produce tsunamis, firestorms, or an impact winter caused by dust blocking sunlight in the stratosphere. [2]

Computer models like those developed by the laboratory allow scientists to evaluate the effectiveness of high-energy deflection options without atmospheric testing. Advanced simulations help quantify the momentum imparted to an asteroid, aiding future planetary defense planning. [1][2]
