Engineers have completed precision adjustments on NASA's uncrewed Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope to align its powerful instruments. ScienceDaily and Science Daily reported that the mission team adjusted a mirror by one-sixteenth the width of a human hair to refine the observatory's focus. [1][6]
The optical adjustments have allowed the Wide Field Instrument on the observatory to produce image quality nearly 30% better than previously predicted. ScienceDaily reported that the team achieved near-perfect alignment after finishing an extensive series of tests and precision work. [1]
The uncrewed infrared space telescope was launched toward a Sun-Earth L2 orbit on 30 August 2026. The observatory is named in honour of Nancy Grace Roman, who served as the first chief of astronomy for NASA. [8]
In separate agency developments, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman named Stephen Cash as director of the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. NASA and NASA News reported that Cash, a veteran engineer and aerospace executive, begins his role on Monday, 19 October. [2][3]
