Astronomers using the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope have detected a rare double debris disk orbiting a dead star, Phys.org Space reported. The structure offers a potential glimpse into the distant future of the solar system. [1]

According to Phys.org Space, the debris consists of the remaining fragments of planets that once orbited the star. Unlike previously observed dead star systems, this debris is organized into two distinct disks separated by a clear gap. [1]

The discovery relies on observations made with the Very Large Telescope in Chile. As FTMQ Space reported earlier, astronomers recently used the same facility to observe potential evidence of an exomoon orbiting a brown dwarf in the CD-35 2722 system. [1][3]

The unique arrangement of the double disk around the white dwarf provides astronomers with new observational data to study how planetary remnants evolve after a star dies. [1]

In short

  • Astronomers found a rare double debris disk around a dead star using the Very Large Telescope.
  • The two parts of the planetary debris disk are separated by a clear gap.
  • The debris consists of leftovers from planets that originally orbited the star.
