The mission team for NASA's Ingenuity Mars helicopter gathered for its final downlink shift, NASA Mars Exploration, Space, and the BBC reported. The event marked the end of operations for the rotorcraft, which completed its final communication session with mission controllers on Earth. [1][2][3][4][6]

Live Science reported that the helicopter sent its final message back to Earth before entering a new phase on the Martian surface. The uncrewed aircraft is set to remain on Mars, where its collected data will serve as a long-term record for future missions. [5][6]

Ingenuity was an autonomous helicopter designed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in collaboration with AeroVironment, Ames Research Center, and Langley Research Center. It arrived on Mars as part of NASA's Mars 2020 mission and made its first flight on 19 April 2021, proving that powered, controlled atmospheric flight is possible in the thin atmosphere of another world. [7]

During the final shift, team members reflected on the mission while preparing the hardware for its stationary role on the planet, NASA Mars Exploration reported. NASA is now shifting focus to future Red Planet efforts, including supporting the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency Martian Moons eXploration mission. [1]
