NASA has confirmed that the heat shield on the Orion spacecraft performed as expected during its reentry into Earth atmosphere earlier this year. NASA News and Mirage News both report that the analysis was conducted over several months following the Artemis II mission splashdown on April 10, 2026. Shortly after the capsule landed, United States Navy divers captured underwater imagery of the thermal protection system to initiate the evaluation. [1][3]

The agency evaluated the spacecraft components to determine if the thermal protection system effectively safeguarded the Orion systems and the crew, according to NASA News. Artemis II was the first crewed flight of the Space Launch System rocket and the Orion spacecraft, which was named Integrity by its four-person crew. [1][4]

The mission was a crewed flyby of the Moon and represented the first flight beyond low Earth orbit since Apollo 17 in 1972. Splashdown is the primary recovery method for American capsules, utilizing parachutes to land spacecraft in water. [4][5]

The recovery technique originated during the Mercury program with Alan Shepard suborbital flight on May 5, 1961. Splashdowns supported the Apollo lunar missions until 1975, and were later reintroduced for crewed missions in 2020 through NASA Commercial Crew Program. [6]
