James Webb Space Telescope findings explain early bright galaxy numbers
Researchers have offered an explanation for why the James Webb Space Telescope detected an unexpectedly high number of bright galaxies during the early universe.

Astronomers analyzing imagery from the James Webb Space Telescope have observed an unexpectedly high number of bright galaxies dating to 400 million to 500 million years after the Big Bang, Universe Today reported. Existing models suggested that such bright galaxies ought to have been far less common during that early epoch. [1]
Researchers state that powerful ultraviolet Lyman-alpha radiation, generated by dense clusters of stars, might account for the high brightness observed in those early galaxies. Universe Today reported that these galaxies formed as very dense, compact systems during the period known as the Cosmic Dawn. [1]
A galaxy is a gravitationally bound physical system containing stars, interstellar gas, dust, dark matter, and planetary systems. Most galaxies contain an average of roughly 100 million stars, while dark matter comprises most of their total mass. [3]
In short
- Images from the James Webb Space Telescope revealed an overabundance of bright galaxies existing 400 million to 500 million years after the Big Bang.
- Researchers attribute the unexpected brightness to powerful ultraviolet Lyman-alpha radiation from dense star clusters during the Cosmic Dawn.
