Francis Halzen was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, Universe Today reported. Universe Today said the award recognizes his role in the discovery of high energy neutrinos originating from deep space. Neutrinos are subatomic particles that carry no electrical charge. [1]
According to Universe Today, this marks the fifth time the Nobel Prize has been awarded for research on neutrinos. Previous physics prizes were granted for discovering the muon neutrino in 1988, detecting neutrinos in 1995, detecting cosmic neutrinos in 2002, and demonstrating neutrino oscillations in 2015. [1]
The Nobel Prizes were first awarded in 1901 based on the will of Alfred Nobel. The original prizes recognized achievements in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and peace. A sixth award for economic sciences was later added in 1968. [4]
In short
- Francis Halzen won the Nobel Prize in Physics for contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory.
- The award recognizes the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin.
- This is the fifth Nobel Prize awarded for neutrino research.
