Francis Halzen, a physicist at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics, Ars Technica, Scientific American, and Adda247 report. Ars Technica reported that the prize was awarded for decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin. [1][4][5][6][9][10]
Halzen led the development and construction of the IceCube facility located in Antarctica, according to Ars Technica. The detector enabled physicists to capture high energy neutrinos generated in distant regions of the universe. Halzen stated during a news conference in Stockholm that the award was a great surprise and that he did not expect it, speaking by phone from Italy, Ars Technica reported. [1]
The Nobel Prize in Physics is awarded annually by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences for outstanding contributions to physics. It is one of the five original prizes created through the will of Alfred Nobel in 1895 and has been presented since 1901. [11]
In short
- Francis Halzen won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics.
- Halzen led the construction of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory in Antarctica.
- The award recognizes the discovery of high-energy neutrinos originating from deep space.
