Canada Appoints Alexander MacDonald as President of Canadian Space Agency

Former NASA chief economist Alexander MacDonald has been named president of the Canadian Space Agency to help accelerate Canada's commercial space sector.

The Canadian government has named Alexander MacDonald as the new president of the Canadian Space Agency. Industry Minister Mélanie Joly announced the appointment on Wednesday, Tech Times and SpaceQ Canada reported. MacDonald served previously as the first chief economist at NASA. [1][4]

During his time at NASA, MacDonald designed the economic framework behind the Commercial Orbital Transportation Services model that supported the growth of private space operations, Tech Times reported. Over the past year, he analyzed Canada's space sector and publicly urged the nation to move faster, according to reports from Tech Times and SpaceQ Canada. [1][4]

MacDonald replaces former president Lisa Campbell, who led the agency from September 2020 until July 2026, SpaceQ Canada reported. The Canadian Space Agency was established in 1990 by the Canadian Space Agency Act as Canada's national space agency. [4][13]

The Canadian government selected MacDonald to help build a commercial space model for Canada similar to the framework created for private sector development in the United States, Tech Times reported. [1]
