Astronomers have confirmed the distance to a powerful radio galaxy dating back nearly 12.5 billion years, Phys.org and Phys.org Space reported. The distant object, designated TXS 2354+015, may be the most powerful radio galaxy ever discovered from that early cosmic era. [1][2]
According to Phys.org Space, researchers originally identified the source as a high-redshift candidate based on its characteristic drop in optical light emissions. Subsequent spectroscopic observations confirmed the findings, placing the galaxy at a redshift of 4.946. [1]
The research team posted their scientific paper detailing the confirmation of TXS 2354+015 to the arXiv preprint server on September 23. [1]
Radio galaxies are massive systems that release large amounts of radio-frequency energy. Other notable giant radio galaxies include Alcyoneus, located 3.5 billion light-years from Earth in the constellation Lynx, which spans 5 megaparsecs across. [3]
In short
- Radio galaxy TXS 2354+015 dates back nearly 12.5 billion years.
- Follow-up spectroscopic observations placed TXS 2354+015 at a redshift of 4.946.
- The research paper confirming the radio galaxy was posted to arXiv on September 23.
