The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency contracted Japanese space startup ArkEdge Space for two projects to improve lunar navigation, Payload Space reported on October 15, 2026. The uncrewed technical demonstrations aim to establish position and navigation solutions for future lunar missions. [1]

Under the primary agreement, ArkEdge Space will conduct a study to integrate a Lunar Augmented Navigation Service receiver onto JAXA's pressurized crew rover, Payload Space reported. The rover is currently being developed by the agency as part of the United States led Artemis program. [1]

Payload Space reported that these contracts build on prior collaboration between the startup and the Japanese space agency. The ongoing work includes designing a small satellite constellation in lunar orbit to provide precise positioning signals to hardware on the surface. [1]

Future surface infrastructure projects are also being pursued by international partners. European space efforts include the development of the Argonaut lunar lander by the European Space Agency and Thales Alenia Space, designed to launch on Ariane 64 rockets to deliver cargo and rovers. [2]
