Astronomers rule out giant planets around binary star 70 Oph AB
Researchers using decades of archival data have ruled out gas giant planets around a nearby binary star system, leaving open the possibility of smaller terrestrial worlds.

Astronomers searching for exoplanets around the nearby binary star 70 Oph AB did not detect any worlds, Universe Today reported. The researchers analyzed decades of archival data alongside new radial velocity measurements. Exoplanets are planets located outside the Solar System. [1][3]
The study successfully ruled out the existence of large Jupiter-mass planets at specific distances around the stellar pair. Universe Today noted that the absence of giant planets does not exclude the presence of smaller Earth-sized planets in the system. [1]
The first confirmed detection of an exoplanet occurred in 1992 around a pulsar, followed by a detection around a main-sequence star in 1995. Thousands of extrasolar planets have been confirmed since those early discoveries. [3]
According to Universe Today, these precise findings will inform future observational searches using advanced facilities. Upcoming instruments include the Extremely Large Telescope, the Giant Magellan Telescope, and the Habitable Worlds Observatory. [1]
In short
- Astronomers found no exoplanets around the binary star 70 Oph AB.
- The findings ruled out Jupiter-mass planets at certain distances.
- Earth-sized planets could still exist within the binary system.
- Future searches will utilize telescopes like the Extremely Large Telescope and Habitable Worlds Observatory.
